Avian Influenza (HPA1) - How you can help!
An unprecedented outbreak of Avian Influenza (HPA1), commonly known as 'Bird Flu', has spread world wide, with cases in seabirds throughout Europe, the UK and the Channel Islands.
In Alderney, we are particularly concerned for the future of our Northern Gannet colonies situated in Ortac and Les Etacs. Alderney hosts around 1% of the global population of this seabird and therefore it is important that this outbreak is tracked and monitored closely.
The Alderney Wildlife Trust, is working with the States of Alderney and Guernsey and closely liaising with French and UK authorities to respond to this devastating situation. We are aware of a significant number of reports of injured and dead animals washing up not only on Alderney, also in the other Channel Islands and along the adjacent French Coast.
How can you help?
The most important thing for you to do is to keep a safe distance from any dead seabirds and report any sightings.
You can do this using the reporting form attached to this page, or if you are in Alderney and see a dead or injured bird on land by calling +44 (0) 1481 820080.
If when making your report you can see a metal ring, or plastic colour ring, attached to the birds leg please note the number and report that as well.
